Do I Have to Buy Term Life Insurance in My State?
You can buy term life insurance from any licensed agent in the state you are physically in, regardless of where you live For example, if you live in Kentucky but are staying in California, you can buy a term life insurance policy from any insurance agent that is licensed to sell insurance in California. The reasoning behind this law has to do with the structure of term life products; term life products eventually expire.
These rules differ from those of Whole Life policies. If you are planning on buying a whole life policy, you need to be a resident of the state that you buy your whole life policy in. In other words, if you live in Kentucky, you need to buy your whole life insurance product from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell in Kentucky.
Keep in mind that many larger insurance agents are licensed to sell insurance in more than one state. In fact, many are licensed to sell in all fifty. However, when you look at the descriptions of products that many life insurance agents offer on their websites, look out for the words: not all products are available in all states. Double check to make sure the product you want to buy is available in your state.
